In astrology, a New Moon represents a fresh start and beginning, as it marks the beginning of the moon’s 8 phases: new, crescent, 1st quarter, gibbous, full, disseminating, last quarter and balsamic. It is a time to plant seeds of intentions for what you wish to transpire in your life. Making wishes, setting intentions and goals are a common practice during New Moons. It is believed that as the moon grows, that your intention or goal will too usually by the time the moon completes its cycle and returns full circle to new again.
New Moon rituals vary between person and/or group. It is important that you create a ritual that has meaning for you, instead of following other guidelines. For those of you who are new to this, I have created a New Moon Intentions Worksheet to help set your intentions for the month.
Below are other suggestions and ideas for your New Moon rituals.
Candles – used to represent fire
Sage aka smudge sticks – to clear the energy
You can also add crystals/rocks, incense, essential oils and herbs.
Create the atmosphere
Pick a space that is peaceful and comfy. Light the sage to cleanse the area. Light candles and incense.
Set your intentions.
Write down your goals and desires you wish to manifest in this new cycle. Write down everything that you desire, no matter how little or simple.
Some people burn their intentions as apart of their ritual, but I keep mine tucked away to revisit at the end of the cycle. You may choose to share your intentions with others if you’re having a group ritual or you may just want to keep them to yourself.
Give gratitude to each intention as if you have already received what you are asking for. For example instead of writing “I want a new job”, write something like ”Thank you so much for my successful business because I no longer have to be stuck in my boring 9-5 job.”
Always remember, where attention goes energy flows and results follow.
Happy New Moon!
